Linux Administrator & Programmer

£18k to £22k (negotiable for exceptional skills)

This is an exceptional opening for a proficient Linux system administrator with programming skills, either through work experience or as a recent computer science graduate. Working alongside one other technical developer, you will enjoy an unusual degree of responsibility in not only maintaining our existing sites and systems, but in proposing and implementing solutions towards meeting our business goals. You'll see immediate results from your work, and gain experience with a broad variety of technologies.

You'll be working on all aspects of our technical operations, including support. So the following skills would be particularly desirable:

  • Good knowledge of the Linux operating system
  • SQL: PostgreSQL or another RDMS
  • High level programming languages, ideally Perl
  • Fluent English

Familiarity with the following would be very helpful:

  • E-commerce systems (especially Interchange)
  • Project work, in a team
  • Integration with Payment Gateways
  • Other integration projects
  • Configuration of Mail Servers
  • Networking, Routing, IP Tables, DNS, etc.
  • Asterisk or other VOIP systems
  • Statistical or mathematical background
  • Working with load-balanced scalable systems

The workplace is generally friendly and informal, but often busy. We work as a team, so you'll need to be able to collaborate positively with all other staff for the overall good of our business and customer service. There are times when interruptions and changes to workflow priorities are inevitable, and a cooperative and flexible approach is vital.

You'll work mostly standard weekday hours, with some flexibility once fully trained. But you'll also be expected to be available for (rare, and mostly off-site) troubleshooting out of hours, if needed to keep our systems running.
